Cisco: the future of healthcare

Cisco healthcare technology highlights benefits of quality and affordable broadband in Africa. Cisco is the worldwide leader in networking. Cisco HealthPresence is a connected healthcare application that combines video, audio and medical information to create a virtual environment similar to that of a clinic or hospital.

The Cisco system eliminates the need for an on-site, face-to-face consultation and is an example of Cisco Connected Healthcare Solutions.

Steve Midgley, Managing Director for Cisco in South Africa, explained why Cisco sought to improve healthcare.

“Demands on the healthcare, education and safety and security industries are drastically increasing and therefore finding innovative and efficient means to manage escalating costs, accelerate field learning, deliver high-quality care, and maximize use of skilled resources is particularly important for organisations.

“We showcased Cisco’s HealthPresence technology during the Seacom Broadband Experience exhibition [October 18, 2009] as we believe improved collaboration among health workers, greater facility for self-treatment, and patient involvement in primary care all serve to optimise the performance of healthcare services, resulting in a healthier and economically stronger nation.

High-speed networks are becoming part of the basic infrastructure of any country, and are vital to good Internet connectivity and access to broadband which in turn will be key to the success of our telemedicine, education and safety and security solutions in South Africa.”
